Small scale broiler production is a great way to diversify your farm. Raising broilers for meat production has a relatively short turn around time, low investment, and can help grow your farm's production. Join Cornell Cooperative Extension and Jerry Stewart of Heaven Scent Farm to learn about how soil health impacts pasture. We will have a tour of Jerry's small dairy and pastures, perform calculations on forage density, learn how to interpret forage and soil test results and use those results to help understand weed management, and learn about how soil health impacts pasture characteristics through the various soil health demonstrations. The activities will have a hands-on focus and provide you with tools that you can take back to your farm. All are welcome, regardless of what livestock you raise!

ANNOUNCING - Chautauqua County Farm Bureau will be hosting a DOT truck clinic, with the NYS Police, at the Cornell-Portland Lab on August 2, from 10am-12noon. 

This clinic will provide farmers with a power point presentation of rules and regulations for farm equipment and farm trucks use on highways, in addition to a mock truck inspection of a semi truck & trailer (semi truck & trailer).

This is clinic is open to the entire county so all farmers will be welcome.

The Cornell Field Day will incorporate multiple workshop-style talks on several topics including biochemistry, genetics and breeding, pest management, and high-cannabinoid production. It will also involve discussion panels on the current legal and education environment in NYS. This hands-on field day will have interactive workshops offering DEC credits on soil, disease, and pest management. Digital ag applications and updates on the USDA germplasm repository will also be included.

The Cornell University Weed Ecology Lab is proud to announce our workshop event for local growers. This workshop aims to engage and prepare farmers for the challenges they face in the field, including managing troublesome weeds, improving herbicide efficacy, and applying new tricks to care for their fields.

Heidi will join us to talk about her vision and plan for Empire Livestock, including the ramping up of beef marketing sales, renovation of barns, bringing in out of state buyers, board sales and more. 

At this free event, we will learn how the Tillotsons' multigenerational Cottonwood Farms manages their organic grazing system in conjunction with their automated milking system.  We will also hear about their soil health and conservation practices. Tillotson will also be able to speak about his experience embracing other technologies to help manage the farm and implement sustainable practices.

Grazing sheep beneath utility-scale solar arrays can build wealth of present and future sheep farmers as vegetation management service providers and access to additional pasture. The Cornell Cooperative Enterprise Program (CEP) conducted a survey earlier this year completed by over 600 farmers. Farmers identified barriers to grazing sheep under solar arrays and weighed in on need for a producer-led organization to negotiate contracts on their behalf, coordinate logistics of multiple flocks, provide transport of sheep to and from the site, care for sheep while on-site, and provide supplemental mowing. Additional questions focused on processing and marketing needs.
