Topics to be covered include why it's important to sample soils, how to take a soil sample, the difference between a pH test and a full analysis soil sample, and how to read a soil sample report. We'll also have a hands-on portion for this workshop that will include a demonstration on using the Cornell pH Test Kit, practice examples on how to determine fertilizer and lime application rates based on your sample report, and how to determine your soil type.

The four hands-on regional training workshops "Growing Great People: Training Skills for Dairy Farmers. Become an Effective On-The-Job Trainer" scheduled in April by Cornell Ag Workforce Development in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension are being rescheduled as online webinars. Separate webinars will be held in English and Spanish: April 14 - English | 6:30 to 8:00 PM and April 16 - Spanish | 12:00 to 1:30 PM. Participation is free and registration is not required. The webinars will be recorded and available after the event. In-person trainings conducted simultaneously in English and Spanish will be rescheduled in fall.

Navigating the CARES Act - An Analysis for Dairy from IDFA

With President Trump's signing of the CARES Act on March 27, 2020, emergency provisions have been enacted to attempt to stabilize the United States economy and help protect employers and employees during the COVID-19 crisis. This historic two trillion dollar bill contains provisions designed to keep businesses running, but can be burdensome to employers and employees alike, to understand and navigate the new legislation.

While we are unable to gather on farm, we can still gather virtually. Please join us on April 21st and/or May 5th from 11am-noon via zoom to discuss dairy management topics. This free event is for dairy producers in the Southwest NY Region.
The main speaker will be Alycia Drwencke, Dairy Management Specialist with the SWNYDLFC team. Teresa McMahon and Ginny Carlberg, FarmNet representatives will be joining us with tips on managing stress during difficult times. Lynn Bliven, CCE Allegany will serve as our moderator and Zoom coordinator. Following the main presentation of approximately 30 minutes, we will have open discussion.
On April 21st the main topic will be disbudding and May 5th will cover fitness for transport
To participate please email Lynn Bliven (LAO3@cornell.edu) to pre-register.
Lynn will send a confirmation email and logistics for the Zoom session.

SWNYDLFC is excited to announce that Amy Barkley, the team's Livestock and Beginning Farm Specialist, will be hosting a 4-part virtual classroom series focused on the management of small poultry flocks.
