Feeding Your Beef Cows Through the Winter

February 12, 2019

Feeding Your Beef Cows Through the Winter

Winter is a challenging time to feed the beef herd. Mud, cold and snow, or rain can stress your cows and increase their nutritional needs. The 2018 hay season was challenging for making quality hay or baleage. How do you know if you are meeting the needs of your herd?
Cornell Cooperative Extension NWNY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team are planning a workshop to assist farmers meet their needs. Mike Baker, Cornell University's Beef Cattle Specialist will review the nutritional needs of the beef cow, how the environmental conditions impact feeding, and how the stages of pregnancy affects her needs. Nancy Glazier, Small Farms and Livestock Specialist with the NWNY Team, will discuss sampling procedures for nutrient analysis to know what you are feeding. The fundamentals of feeding the cow will be covered in the evening workshop on Tuesday, February 12 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Wyoming County Ag & Business Center, 36 Center St, Warsaw.
Pre-registration is required. Cost is $15 per person, $25 per farm or family, payable at the door. To register, contact Nancy Glazier at 585.315.7746 or nig3@cornell.edu.
