Introduction:
Cornell Cooperative Extension's Livestock Program Work Team ( LPWT ) is pleased to announce the second in a series of beef production virtual learning opportunities: Introduction to Stocker Cattle. Stocker cattle are typically light weight calves, either heifers or steers, that are successfully weaned and available to enter the beef production phase with the main objective of adding body weight efficiently and economically prior to the finishing phase. Many regions of New York are well suited for stocker cattle during our grazing season allowing producers to make use of lush pastures or underutilized acreage. Guest presenters include Dr. Mike Baker, Beef Cattle Specialist with Cornell University and Jason Detzle, Livestock Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster Co. Jason also has first hand knowledge and experience with the stocker cattle phase.
