Late Summer Pasture Walk

Thursday, September 19, 2024  1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Murphy's Grass Farm, Doug Murphy, Organic Dairy Producer,  4270 Sherman-Ripley Rd  (Rt 76) , Sherman, NY in Chautauqua County.

Join us for a pasture walk and discussion of  this certified organic dairy farm's efforts to manage weeds using an electric weed unit mounted on a tractor, tiling pastures to improve grass yields, and how Doug and his farm team manage the rotational grazing of 100 Jersey dairy cows and 100 replacements on the farm's 200 acres of pasture. We will also discuss the value of soil sampling, weed management in a conventional grazing system, as well as an organic system, and how to improve pasture quality and yields. Discussion will be facilitated by Lisa Kempisty, Extension Educator, CCE-Chautauqua County, along with Katelyn Miller, Field Crops Specialist with the Cornell University Cooperative Extension SWNY Dairy, Livestock, Field Crop Team who will share  information on improving pasture quality and yields. NY Small Farms Summit 2025: Stronger Together

December 5, 2025
Alfred, NY

We hope you will join us on December 5th for the 2025 New York Small Farms Summit! This is an opportunity to meet other farmers and ag supporters, learn about research and education projects, and set priorities for future efforts to grow small farm success.

At the Allegany County site, we will focus on giving trees a chance and how trees build resiliency on small farms. Whether attracted to fruit, nuts, vegetables, fodder or shade, trees can be an integral part of a successful farming system. Join us as we explore the opportunities for resiliency that come from adding tree crops or managing wooded areas of your farm for agroforestry or silvopasture systems.
