Dairy Forage Options for Marginally Drained Land~ Morrisville

January 29, 2020

The winter of 2019 pointed out the risk of growing alfalfa on somewhat poorly and poorly drained soils as stands were killed in many instances. But as competition for land increases these wetter fields may be the ones that are readily available for rent or purchase. This workshop will be an informal discussion of what you can do to make the most of these less than ideally drained fields.

Presenters:
Joe Lawrence, Dairy Forage Systems Specialist, PRO-DAIRY, Cornell
Amy Langner, Resource Soil Scientist, NRCS, Marcy, NY

Agenda
  • Assessing your soil's crop capabilities
  • Tile and soil health as options to improve crop growth and reduce risk
  • What crops that are appropriate for my land resources?
  • The concept of Core Acres
  • Alternative management strategies
    • Timing of planting
    • Tillage
    • Manure spreading
The full list of meetings are:
  • Monday, January 27, 2020 at Farm Credit East, 7397 State Route 80, Cooperstown, NY 13329
