October 15, 2020

On Farm Safety: Best Practices to Reduce on Farm Labor Injuries

Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in America, and farmers are nearly twice as likely to die on the job as police officers. In order to stay safe while farming, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County (CCEUC) will host an online workshop with New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH), and Ashley Pierce (Owner and Operator of Home at Last Farm) as a guest speakers on October 15th , 2020 on the topic of mitigating the most common on farm injuries.

Farmers may be surprised to know that most accidents and injuries on farms are not caused by traumatic events, but repetitive motion injuries and improper form when moving objects or animals. This workshop will review ways that you can decrease stress on your muscles and joints, protect yourself when moving or interacting with heavy equipment or animals, and how to complete preventative and maintenance exercises to keep your body in good shape for years to come. This workshop will discuss techniques for dairy parlor set up, best practices to stay safe when working with and on animals, as well as simple stretches and exercises that can help your body adjust and heal from the strain of farming.

This webinar is free and is part one of a two-part series offered by Cornell Cooperative of Ulster County Agriculture program. The deadline to register is October 14th at 5pm.
